Based on research from Learning Heroes and PON’s three-year campaign working with parents of English learners, we learned that parents rely on report cards to monitor student learning.

However, report cards often hide significant learning gaps in foundational skills of reading and math, leading parents to unknowingly decline essential academic support. Many children are falling through the cracks.

PON builds on Learning Heroes’ “Go Beyond Grades” campaign to increase parents’ awareness and build their capacity to monitor academic learning and team up with teachers and schools to support their children’s needs.

Informed parents are their child’s best advocate. When parents advocate students receive more services improving reading, math, or English development skills.

By fostering collaboration between families and educators, the campaign aims to create a powerful partnership that drives student achievement and school improvement in Los Angeles County.

The 2020-2023 English Learner (EL) Campaign aimed to empower parents of EL students with the knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively advocate for their children’s educational needs at their schools and districts. Through targeted training, resources, and collaborative partnerships, the campaign sought to improve outcomes for EL students and foster a more inclusive and equitable educational environment.

For English Learner Success Training (4ELS) Training for Parents

PON offers a six-session program to build the capacity of parents of ELs so they are empowered to actively engage in their student’s education. The program focuses on three areas:

1. Understanding how ELs are identified as such and the EL typology;
2. Understanding the reclassification process and monitoring progress toward it; and
3. Increasing awareness of parents’ rights & responsibilities, leadership, and the importance of advocacy.

The 4ELS training program is conducted in person at school sites or nonprofits.

Our online EL-community offers sessions in Spanish so parents receive EL-related updates, refreshers on how to navigate online portals, and can learn ways to support their children’s socioemotional development as they monitor academic learning progress. Our sessions happen on Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 am during summer and winter. Parents who join CAFÉ con PON sessions learn how to enhance student learning and development.
