What We Do
Our Committees
PON identifies and works toward removing barriers that hinder family and community engagement in schools and supports initiatives that would strengthen the implementation of effective practices.
To achieve this we conduct research, analyze policies, serve on committees, and provide recommendations to influence decision-makers. We also develop or participate in campaigns to advance equity and excellence for low-income students of color.
To learn about some of our current projects, see Areas of Focus.
PON has worked with families for 15 years to build their capacity as parents and leaders to engage with schools and advocate for student success and school improvement.
To achieve this, PON develops tools, hosts, or sponsors trainings and summits for parents, parent leaders, and member organizations. PON builds capacity on an ongoing basis on topics related to our advocacy projects and campaigns. This may include:
Learning about proposed legislation or initiatives
Building technical skills like computer Literacy
Building communication and leadership skills like restorative justice
Attending Conferences like Latinos In Action’s Annual Women Conference
Co-hosting “Strong Families, Strong Schools & Communities” Events
Hosting a conference or summit

Regular, ongoing communication with members and partners helps PON assess progress, challenges, and needs. Once priorities are identified, PON develops and leads advocacy and capacity building projects with members and partners. PON also participates in and promotes member and partner initiatives that align with our work to transform schools and improve equity in education.
